The History of Creamfields
Every year, on the last weekend of August, tens of thousands of electronic music lovers set up camp in a field in Daresbury, Cheshire. Why? Because of Creamfields, one of the biggest and most beloved dance festivals in the UK. Today, Creamfields is a four-day spectacle attracting over 70,000 people per day, featuring the world’s top DJs. But who would have thought that it all started in a much humbler way a few decades ago? Let’s take a trip back to the ’90s to see how a small club night evolved into the festival giant we know today.

It All Started in a Liverpool Club
Our story begins in the early ‘90s, in the heart of Liverpool. In 1992, a nightclub called Cream opened its doors and quickly became a house music hotspot. Every week, it was packed with people dancing until sunrise – a true rave scene of its time. With such an enthusiastic crowd, the club’s founders (led by James Barton and his team) had a bold idea: why keep this energy inside four walls? It was time to take the party outdoors and create a festival.
1998 – The First Creamfields: A Party Becomes a Festival
The big moment came in 1998. The first-ever Creamfields Festival was born! For the debut event, they chose a vast open space: Matterley Estate near Winchester, Hampshire, far from Liverpool. It might seem odd that they went so far south, but it gave the festival the room it needed to be something massive.
And massive it was. The first Creamfields was one night only, but explosive. Around 25,000 people showed up on Saturday, May 2, 1998, for an unforgettable night. The lineup featured some of the biggest electronic music names of the time – legends like Sasha, Paul van Dyk, and even the Daft Punk performed at the debut event. Imagine seeing all of them in one night! And guess what? Tickets back then cost around £37 (yes, really). The success of the first year set the stage for Creamfields future.
1999 – Back to Liverpool: The Festival Finds Its Home
After the triumph of 1998, the organizers decided that Creamfields should come home. In 1999, the festival moved north to a location closer to its Liverpool roots. The venue was Liverpool’s old airport (Speke Airfield), a massive open space that allowed Creamfields to double its capacity. That year, up to 50,000 ravers gathered for another one-day dance marathon.
The move was a game-changer. The lineup was bigger, featuring Pet Shop Boys, Basement Jaxx, and other big names, proving that Creamfields was already a summer highlight. Transforming an abandoned airport into a giant dancefloor was nothing short of magical – and fans loved it.
The 2000s – Growing Bigger and Winning Awards
Throughout the 2000s, Creamfields continued to take place every year on August Bank Holiday weekend, growing larger with each edition. For several years, it remained in Liverpool, attracting massive crowds eager to experience the best electronic music. More stages were added, the sound systems became louder, and the headliners even bigger. By the mid-2000s, Creamfields had started collecting awards, solidifying its status as the UK’s #1 dance festival.
Meanwhile, Creamfields wasn’t just a UK event anymore. The brand expanded internationally, with versions of the festival popping up in countries across the world. What started as a local rave event had become a global phenomenon.
2006 – A New Home in the Countryside
By 2006, Creamfields had outgrown Liverpool. The city loved it, but the festival needed more space, and a greener location. So, the 9th edition of the festival moved to Daresbury, Cheshire, a countryside spot between Liverpool and Manchester.
This was a turning point. Imagine a huge farmland being transformed into an open-air rave paradise – that was the new Creamfields. The vibe became even more electric, with attendees enjoying camping, nature, and music all in one place. This was the beginning of the modern Creamfields era, marking its spot as the UK’s ultimate dance music festival.
2008 – A Two-Day Party for the 10th Anniversary
In 2008, Creamfields hit a milestone: 10 years of raving. To celebrate, they doubled the fun. For the first time, the festival became a two-day event!
On August 23-24, 2008, thousands of festival-goers experienced back-to-back nights of pure energy. The lineup was stacked, featuring Fatboy Slim, Tiësto, Paul Oakenfold, David Guetta, Kasabian, and Ian Brown. It was clear that Creamfields was no longer just a party – it was a full festival experience.
2016 – Four Days of Madness & The Steel Yard Stage
Fast forward to 2016, and Creamfields had gone next level. It expanded to four days for the first time – a Thursday-to-Sunday rave marathon!
But that wasn’t the only big change. 2016 also introduced something legendary: the Steel Yard Stage. This massive steel-framed structure became one of the most iconic festival stages ever. Standing 20 meters tall and hosting 20,000 ravers, it redefined the way electronic music could be experienced.
2022 – 25 Years of Creamfields & A Second Festival!
In 2022, Creamfields celebrated 25 years of raving history. To mark the occasion, the organizers had a surprise: a second UK festival.
Creamfields South was launched in Hylands Park, Chelmsford, in June 2022, creating a twin to the original event. Now, festival-goers could experience Creamfields twice a year – one in the North (Daresbury) and one in the South (Chelmsford). The debut event was a hit, and plans were immediately made to continue it for future years.
At the same time, Creamfields unveiled the Runway Stage, a 360-degree audiovisual main stage, offering a next-level experience. After 25 years, the festival was still innovating and surprising its fans.
A Festival That Never Stops Evolving
From its early days in a Liverpool nightclub, to massive outdoor stages, to two UK locations, Creamfields has been on an incredible journey. It has grown from a one-night rave with 25,000 people into a multi-day, globally recognized event, drawing crowds from all over the world.
It has survived rain, mud, and competition, expanding and evolving, while never losing its core spirit – that feeling of freedom, unity, and endless dancing under the stars.
Today, Creamfields is more than just a festival – it’s part of dance music culture. Every year, fans anticipate who will headline, what new experiences will be introduced, and how they will once again dance the night away. And if history tells us anything, Creamfields will keep pushing the limits of what a festival can be.
